Compatibility of grinding balls the fifth group of hardness and armor plates of mills.

The specialists of Energosteel while implementing the grinding balls of the fifth group of hardness (DSTU 3499-97) on the market, faced with the fear of technical specialists and consumers that the use of grinding balls the fifth group of hardness can lead to increased wear armor plates installed in the inner drum of ball mills. Thus, specialists of Energosteel have decided to look into this issue in more details and determine how work of grinding balls with high volumetric hardness can affect the wear armor plates used to protect the inner drum of ball mills.

Nowadays, basically use armor plates made of two materials:

– Rubber.

This type of lining used in ball mills in ore mining and processing industry (the second and third stages of grinding), construction industry (production of aerated concrete, brick, etc.), cement and ceramic industries.

– Steel (manganous).

Armored plates of this material used in the mining industry (the first stage of grinding in ball mills), the energy-generating plants (TPP), the cement industry.

In order to solve this issue, experts of Energosteel company have analyzed the technical parameters (chemical composition, hardness, etc.) of steel and rubber armor plates which currently used by our customers.

We have been conducted a few industrial tests for the analysis of impact work the grinding balls of high volumetric hardness (DSTU 3499-97) for wear of steel lining. We analyzed in addition to the specific consumption of grinding media and grinding quality, the “rate of attrition” of armor plates made of steel alloyed manganese. The experiment have conducted at the enterprises belong to the energy-generating industry. The test results showed that the use of grinding balls the fifth group of hardness does not shorten duration work of steel armor plates.

Effect of the grinding media working in ball mills that are equipped with rubber liner also was determined during industrial tests. Industrial tests were conducted at the enterprises specializing in the production of aerated concrete. The tests were conducted on the Ukrainian and foreign companies. Results of industrial tests have shown using the grinding balls of the fifth group of hardness (according to DSTU 3499-97) produced by “Energosteel” does not affect the wear on the rubber lining, the lining wears out according to parameters stated by the manufacturer.

Also, experts of Energosteel company provided all physical and chemical parameters of grinding balls the fifth group of hardness ( DSTU 3499-97) to technical specialists of “Quartz” company. “Quartz” company is the largest Russian producer of rubber armor plates. According to the analysis of the provided data, “Quartz” experts came to the conclusion that using the grinding balls with high volumetric hardness “Energosteel” production doesn’t affect the wear on the rubber lining of ball mills.

Summarizing the above, the technical specialists of Energosteel company can safely say that using grinding balls the fifth group of hardness doesn’t lead to increased wear of all types armor plates that currently used to protect the drum of ball mills.
